José graduated from an integrated master's in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minho with a MSc in Biomaterials, Rehabilitation and Biomechanics, and recently finished a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. His PhD, titled “Development of osteoinductive coatings for spinal fusion implants (fusion cages)”, was part of the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions ITN-EID project SPINNER and involved an industrial secondment at Fin-ceramica spa in Faenza, Italy. Between his MSc and PhD, José briefly worked on two projects on sensing devices for the wine and the automobile industries.
José in currently working as a Research Associate in Musculoskeletal Cell Biology and Exercise Modelling alongside Professor Mark Lewis.
José’s research has been focused on the development of biomaterials for different orthopaedic applications, with a special focus on composite materials capable of promoting bone regeneration.
José’s current project aims to develop multi-tissue systems which will allow the in vitro study into how different exercise regimes affect the secretome produced by human skeletal muscle, and how said secretome affects the development of different human tissues, including bone.
