Sports, Development and Climate Change

As part of the LU Climate Action campaign, Dr James Esson and Dr Jamie Kenyon will have an informal conversation about their areas of research and how they relate sports and development to today’s urgent climate and sustainability challenges.

This session is open to all students and staff to engage and join in on the conversation about the exciting research happening at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and how they apply to the real world scenarios involving people and the planet.

LU Climate Action is a campaign that encourages students to have their say on climate and sustainability issues at the university, and lead in making positive changes across campus.

As well as events, the campaign includes a survey to find out what students think about campus sustainability and climate actions. Anyone who completes the survey can choose to be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win one of three £100 vouchers for EcoReplenishers Zero Waste and Refill shop in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ town centre.

The results of the survey will be presented and discussed at a special Student Assembly event in November.

  • Angela YT Chan is a researcher, curator and artist specialising in climate change and will be chairing this event. Angela has been commissioned by LU Arts to lead the LU Climate Action campaign.
  • Dr James Esson is the Undergraduate Programme Director for Geography and Environment and a Reader in Geography. His research cuts across development, political and population geography. James is investigating the efficacy of sport, art, and cultural programmes in promoting environmental sustainability and social justice. This work is supported by the ESRC-DFID Development Frontiers Research Fund.
  • Dr James Andrew (Jamie) Kenyon is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Management, and the current Programme Leader for the BSc Sport Management degree. His research is broadly concerned with the strategic marketing and management of sport events and organisations, spanning community-based organisations and events through to their international counterparts. This includes a focus on branding and relationship management in sport and the impacts and legacies of events (specialising in the Olympic Games).
