Jonathan Folland - Inaugural Lecture: Fortius - The Genes, Neurones and Anatomy of Stronger Muscles
Fortius: The Genes, Neurones and Anatomy of Stronger Muscles
Stronger muscles and improved physical function are of interest for the performance of elite and recreational athletes, the prevention and rehabilitation of injury, as well as healthy ageing and musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis.
In this inaugural lecture, Jonathan Folland will trace his career examining the integrative science of muscular strength. From early studies on resistance training that led to an interest in the effects of candidate genes on strength and the response to training, through to explosive strength, and especially the role of the nervous system in the ability to produce contractile force quickly. Finally, he will share recent insights in muscle and tendon anatomy in relation to performance and injury risk.
