Professor Lauren Sherar
Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health
Our academics are leading the future in the critical understanding of physical activity for children and adolescents. Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health, Lauren Sherar, discusses her research and role at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
Meet Lauren
My name is Lauren and I am a Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health and the Associate Dean (Education and Student Experience) in the School of Sport Exercise and Health Sciences.
In my current role I spend a lot of my time working with my fantastic Learning and Teaching Senior Leadership Team to help to support staff to give students a top-class educational experience while at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. However, we are also passionate that improvements made also promote staff wellbeing and job satisfaction. The best part of my job is working with all colleagues in SSEHS – they truly are the best!
Investigating biological, social and environmental determinants of activity
My research area is the associations among physical activity/sedentary behaviour, body composition and cardiometabolic health in children and adolescents. I have a specific interest in the investigation of biological, social and environmental determinants of activity and sedentary behaviours in a manner to inform interventions.
I have expertise in longitudinal date design, measurement of biological maturation and objective measurement of physical activity/sedentary behaviours.
I have three children Olivia (18), Jack (16) and Georgia (14), who were all born during my PhD. Like many I have had first hand experiences of balancing home life with academia and am very grateful that I was supported and empowered to have a career while raising a family.
However, I know across the sector this is not always the case. Thus, I am extremely passionate about supporting early career researchers, in particular Doctoral Researchers and Research Associates, to be able to thrive and succeed in Academia. I very much enjoy being a mentor (formal and informal) and to pay forward the support and opportunities that I was provided.
