Kirsty Reynolds
Research Assistant in Sports Nutrition and Water Balance
Our staff are leading the future of sports performance research. Research Assistant, Kirsty Reynolds, discusses her work on enhancing sports performance and dietary supplementation.
Meet Kirsty
My name is Kirsty, and I am a Research Assistant in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
Exploring optimising carbohydrate intake for endurance sports
This summer I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr Lewis James and Dr Stephen Mears. My thesis title is ‘Optimising carbohydrate intake for endurance sports in temperate and warm environments’, and as part of my PhD I worked alongside industry funder, Decathlon SA.
My PhD has given me the opportunity to collaborate within the industry and see how my work has influenced consumer products (such as carbohydrate drinks and gels). I also had the opportunity to work with others within the research group, learning new skills and presenting my data at international conferences to industry funders.
This year I was fortunate enough to be shortlisted for both the Gatorade Sports Science Institute Sports Nutrition Award (at the European College of Sport Sciences Conference) and the Gatorade Sport Science Institute Young Investigator Award (at the American College of Sports Medicine Conference), where I placed second.
I have recently started a new role within the SSEHS as a Research Associate in Exercise Nutrition alongside Dr Tom Clifford. Most sport science research is limited in female influence, so I am excited to be involved in an industry funded project specifically looking at females and dietary supplementation. The project aims to look at the impact of dietary supplements and the effect on appetite post-exercise.
Looking to the future, I hope that I can help contribute to advancing sport science research in females at all levels of sport.
