Our academics are leading the future of disease prevention and nutrition. Lecturer in Nutrition, Dr Hibbah Osei-Kwasi, aims to utilise innovative lifestyle behaviour interventions to prevent, treat and manage non-communicable diseases.
Meet Hibbah
Dr Hibbah Osei-Kwasi is an academic at the School of Sports, Exercise and health Sciences, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
Dr Osei-Kwasi has an interest in global nutrition issues in low- and middle-income countries. She also has specialist research interests in nutrition inequalities linked to migration and ethnicity, dietary practices, and its relationship with non-communicable diseases, as well as behaviour change interventions with a focus on African and Caribbean communities. Hibbah’s research cuts across nutrition, psychology, and public health.
Preventing disease through diet and physical activity
Having previously worked in multidisciplinary international research teams to explore food environments in Africa, where she led the development of The African urban food environment framework , Hibbah is now exploring opportunities to work together with researchers to identify and evaluate innovative lifestyle behaviour (diet & physical activity) interventions to prevent, treat and manage non-communicable diseases in Ghana.
Dr Osei-Kwasi’s current research focusing on community -centred nutrition interventions, build on her previous work (PhD and AXA postdoctoral fellowship) that explored the determinants of diets and the community readiness of African immigrants to prevent obesity in Greater Manchester.
Dr Osei-Kwasi leads a network of nutrition academics of African origin (Sahara Nutrition) in the UK, who aim to empower African immigrant communities to take charge of their health through improved nutrition. She also supports the Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) in their community engagement activities to promote healthier diets among African and Caribbean communities. She is also a registered nutritionist and currently co-chairs the Nutrition Society’s special interest group on Diet and Health of Ethnic Minority Groups.
