Meet Claire

Claire Madigan

My name is Dr Claire Madigan, and I am a lecturer in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. My research focuses on helping people to better manage their weight to improve their health and I recently published systematic reviews in the BMJ.

Aiding weight management for brighter futures

My years of experience in public health have led me to conduct research about implementable public health interventions for weight management and maintenance of behaviours. My overall aim is to help people live longer, healthier lives.

My committment to the issue has only grown stronger in recent events, as my father needed to have a hip replacement and was told to lose weight but not offered any help to do so. Therefore, I have started to investigate whether weight loss before surgery is beneficial and what interventions can be utilised across surgical specialities.

I am currently leading on an evaluation of the Prehabilitation services in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland and working with colleagues in exploring Prehabilitation interventions being delivered in the North East North Cumbria regions.

I am also co-theme lead of Brief interventions and making every contact counts within the Centre for Lifestyle, Medicine and Behaviour and supervise three wonderful PhD students.
