Background
Professor Vadim Silberschmidt was appointed to the Chair of Mechanics of Materials at the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, UK in 2000. Prior to this he was a Senior Researcher at the Institute A for Mechanics at Technische Universität München in Germany. Educated in the USSR, he worked at the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics and Institute for Geosciences (both - the USSR (later – Russian) Academy of Sciences). In 1993 – 1994 he worked as a visiting researcher, Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation at Institute for Structure Mechanics DLR (German Aerospace Association), Braunschweig, Germany. In 2011-2014he was Associate Dean (Research). He is a Charted Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institute of Physics, where he also chaired Applied Mechanics Group in 2008-2011.
