Born in Leigh, Lancashire, attended Hindley and Abram Grammar School. B.Sc. and Ph.D. attained at University of Leeds. Research posts at Cambridge University and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Lecturer in Manufacturing Engineering in 1995.
