Systems Engineering is a transdisciplinary approach that integrates all disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort, developing an innovation from concept to fully operational system.

Systems Engineering integrates business and technical needs to develop high-quality products that meets a range of requirements.

Systems Engineers use both systemic thinking (viewing the entire system) and systematic approaches (methodically analysing system components) to manage complexity effectively.

At º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, we collaborate with around 40 employers, partnering with our Systems Engineering team to conduct world-class research and offer valuable industry insights for training future Systems Engineering leaders.

Our research focuses on developing and applying systems engineering and systems approaches to address complex problems and create solutions for a better world. In collaboration with INCOSE, we host hybrid lectures—both in-person and online—featuring Systems Engineering professionals to discuss the practical applications of Systems Engineering.

º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ offers a Level 7 Systems Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, allowing employers to enhance the capabilities and performance of their future leaders. Please note that we hold information sessions for prospective apprentices every third Wednesday of the month. This webpage provides information for both employers and students.

Professor Michael Henshaw

Programme Director for Systems Engineering

Michael's research focuses on the integration and management of complex socio-technical systems. A graduate in Applied Physics, he spent 17 years working in defence and aerospace before joining º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in 2006. He is Co-chair of the IEEE Systems of Systems Engineering Technical Committee.

Dr Siyuan Ji

Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering

Dr. Ji specialises in model-based systems engineering. He currently collaborates with NWS and Nuvia on assurance case development, BT and NPL on quantum systems engineering, and Synoptix on AI-assisted MBSE.

Professor Charles Dickerson

Chair in Systems Engineering

Focusing on Systems Architectures, Charles chairs the INCOSE Systems Architectures Working Group. His previous roles include Technical Fellow at BAE Systems, Aegis Systems Engineer for Ballistic Missile Defence and Director of Architecture in the Office of the Chief Engineer for the US Navy.

Professor Roy Kalawsky

Director of Advanced VR Research Centre - The Centre for Virtual Engineering

Roy joined º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in 1995 after 18 years at BAE Systems, where he was responsible for cockpit research and development across the Military Aircraft Division. His research focuses on modelling, simulation and VR, and he is Airbus/RAEng Chair Digital and Data Engineering Information Systems.

Dr Melanie King

Lecturer in Systems Engineering

Melanie has held roles in the research and design of digital products such as laboratory simulation software, integrated information systems and data architectures. She's experienced in project management and was head of º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s Centre for Engineering Design and Education.

Sarogini's research focuses on AI-driven architectures using wireless networks for decision-making systems. Her work emphasises the application of machine learning and semantic technologies to support legal decision processes, particularly in complex data-driven environments.
