As the world strives for peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet, intelligent use of data to connect infrastructure is essential. Whether it be in defence, food production, manufacturing, space communications, sports or transport, our research in sensing, communications, systems of systems, mechatronics, control, and signal processing makes an impact on quality of life.
Intelligent sensing and communication combined with signal processing and artificial intelligence can be used to solve the global challenges we face within these key areas. The application of these methods is crucial to enabling efficient use of time and resources, including energy usage. Smarter factories, safer roads and intelligent autonomous transport will be the results of applying such methods as we strive to enhance the quality of the environment that surrounds us.
Our areas of expertise
Model-based systems engineering
Applying the transdisciplinary approach of MBSE in a complex and interconnected world to successfully create and sustain ever-increasing complex technical systems.
Wireless communications
Understanding and controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves and the key part they play, through the development of novel antenna designs and radiofrequency devices.
Signal
processing
Addressing current communication restrictions in a range of applications from underwater to cybersecurity to advance algorithmic design and protocols to improve communications networks.
Fundamental research
Our research has led to the development of 3D-printed radiofrequency devices, including lenses to extend RF systems' communication range or to reduce the amount of transmitted power.
We have developed a range of metasurfaces consisting of a 2D patterned metallic shape that can block specific electromagnetic frequencies; this includes the capability to reflect an electromagnetic wave in any direction or reduce the radar cross-section of objects.
