Profile

Selene States is a teacher across Fine Art and Textiles at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

Selene is a British-American artist, translator, and dress studies scholar. Her practice-based 'Pantsuit PhD' in Fine Art at the Bauhaus University Weimar examines the radical history of women 'wearing the pants.' She holds a diploma in Fine Arts from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, where she studied video, painting, and sculpture under Marijke van Warmerdam and John Bock. With a conceptual fine art practice exploring themes of performativity, re-enactment and embodiment, she deploys strategies of appropriation, reproduction and translation for a diversity of practices: from performance, dance and choreography, to 16mm film and narrative video, to crafted textiles and fashion design. She has presented her practice-based research at FIT and Parsons in New York and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Her videos and installations have featured at the Milton Keynes Gallery, l'Aubette Strasbourg, and Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. Building on fifteen years of experience as a cultural translator between the Anglo-American and German sphere, her texts on art theory and history have been published with MoMa New York and Moscow, Scheidegger & Spiess, Park Books, and Spector among others.
