Phil Barber is an artist, lecturer and researcher. Originally from Birmingham and more recently based in the East Midlands, he graduated from Birmingham School of Art’s MA programme in 2008. Since then he has exhibited nationally with work shown at New Generation Art Festival, Flatpack Festival, Grand Union, amongst others as well as winning the IKON Gallery prize.
Phil’s work often uses manipulations of video, film and projection; he has also directed a number of music videos exploring these ideas which have been screened on the BBC, Channel 4 and others, working for the BBC as part of their Vision Intake Pool on various projects including the 2010 Electoral Debates and programme concept development.
Phil has worked in education alongside his practice for over a decade, lecturing at all from levels 4 to 7, contributing not only to Fine Art courses but also Film, Graphic Design, Photography and Media Studies degrees. He has devised, written and validated a number of HE courses, working with partner institutions including Oxford Brookes University and Northampton University to write degrees in Professional Arts Practice and Creative Film. In 2021 Phil was recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, reflecting his work in curriculum design, programme leadership and innovation in delivery.
Phil is currently a PhD student at Bournemouth University’s Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, using art practice to interrogate and explore the contemporary relationship between conspiracy, misinformation and masculine identities and performance. A chapter of his work can be read in the 2022 Palgrave Handbook of Media & Misinformation and his output can been seen in a number of upcoming exhibitions.
