A digital twin is a virtual model of an object, system or process, and helps us test decisions before we make them and understand how different actions might affect the real world. Digital twins have applications across all sectors and play a leading role in delivering benefits to society, the economy, business and the environment. The programme ensures that digital twins use technology and processes that are accessible to any organisation, whether from the public or private sector and irrespective of size.
The NDTP was launched by HM Treasury in 2018, with the new ethics strategy marking a key milestone for the programme. Professor Tom Jackson (chair of the technical working group) and Professor Ian Hodgkinson (core working group member) played a leading role in its development, with this recent achievement a further demonstration of the real-world impact of their digital decarbonisation movement.
