Data Carbon Calculator

This simple calculator has been developed to show organisations the worst-case scenario for their carbon emissions from data based on number of employees, as well as the amount of dark data potentially being generated, and the potential cost ($) to offset the data carbon footprint.

It uses prior research and is grounded on three key factors:

  1. the rate at which data is generated every second
  2. the amount of CO2 emissions that are produced by data
  3. the cost of nature-based carbon offsetting schemes

Sources and calculations are documented to provide full transparency and provenance behind the calculator. This ensures that our findings are based on accurate and reliable information, and can be easily replicated or scrutinized by other researchers or stakeholders.
