Summary of project activities and outcomes:
WEDC provided the sanitation sector lead researcher examining NGO – government relations in South Asia. This was done as part of a multi-sector programme in collaboration with IDD Birmingham University, LSHTM and CIE (Sussex University). The two particular urban sanitation case studies that were developed on NGO-Government relations: are the Orangi Pilot Project in Pakistan and the Shelter Associates sanitation programme in Sangli, Maharashtra, India. The research led to a special issue journal of Public Administration and Development, including a paper entitled: Complementary Roles? NGO – Government relations for community-based sanitation in South Asia.
