Faecal waste flow diagrams (SFDs): Is human excreta safely managed?
WEDC staff involved: Rebecca Scott
Funded by: GIZ Value: £235,000
Location: Global Duration: 2016-2018
Summary of project activities
This project developed standardized tools, methods and guidance to analyse excreta flows in a town or city, generate a faecal waste flow diagram (or Shit Flow Diagram, SFD) and an accompanying report of the service delivery context.
The tools are enabling cities around the world to develop their own SFD and accompanying assessment report. All of the tools, together with the growing number of SFDs and reports, are disseminated through the SFD web portal, hosted by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) platform.
Summary of project outcomes and impact
This project has successfully established Shit Flow Diagrams (SFDs) as a widely recognized advocacy and decision-support tool to analyse excreta flows in a city, as the basis for decision-making. Their application has the potential to shift the focus of attention, money and activities towards effective and citywide inclusive urban sanitation.
