Conference session on metamaterials in sports

Metamaterials are engineered structures with unusual combinations of properties. These unusual properties are benefiting sporting goods, allowing safer helmets, improving tennis rackets, and tuning the response of running shoes. In turn, sporting goods have been an excellent platform to develop manufacturing and supply chains for metamaterials. Many of the products featuring metamaterials focus on auxetics – a form of mechanical metamaterial. Metamaterials research spans various domains, and in this session, we hope to promote the application of more metamaterials in sports. Suggested topics could include:

  • Mechanical metamaterials - new developments and applications
  • Active metamaterials - adapting to external stimuli
  • Acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces – tuning or measuring the sound of impacts
  • Augmented reality – photonic metasurfaces for heads on displays
  • Electromagnetic metamaterials for biosensors 

The session is sponsored by the UK MetaMaterials Network (UKMMN), who connect academia, industry, governmental agencies and other professional bodies to enable the full utilisation of the UK’s metamaterials research and exploitation capabilities, from fundamental science to market-leading technology. UKMMN has ~700 members in its expert database and is free to join – welcoming UK or international applications. UKMMN will fund six places at the conference, with one place reserved for a PhD student and another for an industry representative. Funding will be awarded based on quality of submitted abstracts. To be eligible for the funding, you must meet the following criteria:

  • UK based member of the UK Metamaterials Network.
  • Member of ISEA when confirming attendance at the conference.  
  • Not presented at the last ISEA conference (Purdue 2022)
  • An author of an accepted abstract
