Dr Giulia Borriello
IAS Open Programme
Kent State University
Dr Giulia Borriello is an assistant professor at Kent State University whose work aims to characterize heterogeneity in young children’s cognitive and math skills and to uncover how interactions between these two domains influence academic success.
The central goals of her research program are to (1) identify the antecedents, correlates, and lifelong consequences of early cognitive and math skills, and (2) uncover the complex processes driving knowledge gains in cognition and math across development. She recently completed a postdoc in Emily Fyfe’s lab where she investigated the relation between patterning skills and mathematics achievement in children and adults, and has just published a review on the (in)effectiveness of domain-general skills training for developing early mathematics knowledge.
Prior to this she worked as a postdoc in Professor David Purpura’s lab at Purdue University, where she conducted research into the home-math environment and early math outcomes. Giulia and Joanne Eaves have conducted work into different patterning and arithmetic skills over the last two years at the University of Nottingham’s Summer Scientist Week.
During their IAS Fellowship, Dr Borriello is collaborating with Dr Joanne Eaves from the Department of Mathematics Education.
