Professor Joel Stillerman

Joel Stillerman is Professor of Sociology and Faculty-in-Residence in the Honors College at Grand Valley State University, Michigan, USA. He has also taught at the University of Arizona, USA; the Catholic University of Chile and Diego Portales University, Chile.
He is the author of Identity Investments: Middle-class Responses to Precarious Privilege in Neoliberal Chile (Stanford University Press, 2023), The Sociology of Consumption: A Global Approach (Polity, 2015), and coeditor of ¿Qué significa el trabajo hoy?: Continuidad y cambio en una sociedad global [What does Work Mean Today? Continuity and Change in a Global Society](Catalonia, 2012).
His publications on labor activism, cities, consumer culture, and middle classes in Chile and Latin America appear in Poetics, Latin American Politics and Society, Journal of Consumer Culture, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Political Power and Social Theory, City & Community, Qualitative Sociology, Mobilization, Social Science History, International Labor and Working-class History, and several edited volumes. He is the recipient of two Fulbright awards and the Charles Horton Cooley Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Sociology from the Michigan Sociological Association.
During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Stillerman is collaborating with Dr Adrian Leguina & Dr Fran Azpitarte from the Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy.
