Professor Suntje Schmidt

Suntje Schmidt coordinates the research area "Economy and Civil Society" at the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research (IRS). She is also Junior Professor for Applied Economic Geography at the Humboldt University in Berlin.
Suntje Schmidt studied Geography, American Studies, and Business Administration at the Technische Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and City College in New York. In 2012 she defended her doctoral thesis on “Channels, Effects and Spatial Implications of Knowledge Spillovers in the Knowledge Economy” at the Department of Geography at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. At the IRS she worked as a project coordinator as well as a project leader of several international research projects and as a research fellow in both, third party funded and institutionally funded research projects.
She was guest researcher at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, University of Toronto, and University of Turku. Between 2019 and 2020 she was Acting Professor for Economic Geography at the University of Aachen. Suntje also acts as the RSA ambassador for Germany. Suntje investigates creative and innovation processes from a spatio-temporal perspective, spatial dimensions of work and entrepreneurship, and the social construction of resilience in volatile labour markets.
