Oliver Ibert is Director of the Leibniz-Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS) in Erkner (near Berlin) and Professor of Socio-Spatial Transformation at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.
From 2009 to 2019 he was Head of the Research Department “Dynamics of Economic Spaces” at the IRS and Professor of Economic Geography at the Freie Universität Berlin. Oliver Ibert acquired the venia legendi for geography in 2009 at the University of Bonn and his PhD in Social Science 2002 at the University in Oldenburg. His master’s degree in Geography, German Literature and Political Sciences was awarded in 1997 by the University of Oldenburg. Among his research topics are creative processes from a spatial perspective, knowledge practices, temporary organizations, geographies of value creation, online communities, practices of crisis response and regional development policies.
He has published on these topics in international Journals like Economic Geography, Journal of Economic Geography, Geoforum, Global Networks, Research Policy or Dialogues in Human Geography. Ibert acted as spokesperson of the Leibniz Research Network “Spatial Knowledge for Society and the Environment (Leibniz R)” from 2021-2022 and as member of the steering group of the Leibniz Research Alliance on “Crises in a Globalised World” from 2012 to 2019. In 2014, he was a visiting professor at the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Toronto and in 2018 a Halsworth Visiting Professor at the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester.
