IAS Residential Fellow
Porto University
Professor José F. Alves is a Professor of Mathematics at Porto University and a leading expert in ergodic theory and dynamical systems. He has published more than 40 research articles and 2 books. His joint paper with C. Bonatti and M. Viana, ‘SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is mostly expanding’. Invent. Math. 140 (2000), no. 2, 351–398, is considered one of the most influential papers on the topic of smooth ergodic theory and partially hyperbolic systems.
Professor Alves has a vast experience in managing research projects funded research and he is a recipient of several fellowships funded by FCT (the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology). He has supervised 9 PhD students and 8 postdoctoral fellows.
He is currently supervising 2 PhD students and 1 postdoctoral fellow. He has been an examiner on a large number of PhD and habilitation committees. He is on the editorial board of Chaos, Solitons and Fractals and Journal of Dynamical and Control Systems. Moreover, he is currently the Director of the Department of Mathematics, University of Porto.
