Dr Janson’s background is in nonlinear dynamical systems, random processes in them, data analysis and applications in biology, medicine, physics and engineering.

She co-authored a book "Synchronisation: from simple to complex" (Springer 2009). Her current research is focussed on mathematics of learning. Recently Dr Janson proposed a new conceptual model of the brain, which departs from a neural network paradigm and instead is based on a novel type of dynamical systems, which she designed specially to handle cognitive phenomena.

Her approach could help resolve the famous philosophical mind-body problem as described in her TEDx talk "Can we resolve the mind-body problem with mathematics?". It could also pave the way to creating artificial intelligent devices of novel type.
