Green Hydrogen from Seawater
The team is also working on other types of low-cost scalable production of green hydrogen. An example of this is the production of hydrogen from direct seawater electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. One problem with traditional methods of doing this is the production of chlorine from the salt as part of the electrolysis process. To avoid an expensive desalination process, non-precious metal-based catalysts are developed and employed with an alkaline anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) for the seawater electrolyser, as shown below.
