º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Doctoral Researcher awarded Gold Medal for National Three Minute Thesis success

Ridzuan A-Rasid, a Doctoral Researcher from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, made history as the first finalist from an art and design background in the National Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition.

Developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, the 3MT® competition challenges candidates to present their research topic to a non-specialist audience. Now a global competition, 3MT® is an excellent platform for public engagement.

Ridzuan, a researcher in the School of Design and Creative Arts sponsored by the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education and Universiti Putra Malaysia, presented Goldfish vs Human – exploring the potential of motion graphics to create an interactive, inclusive learning playground for Generation Z.

Ridzuan won his School’s 3MT® to become a University finalist at the Doctoral College’s Summer Showcase. Not only was he crowned the Winner by the official judging panel, but also won the People’s Choice Award.

He was then entered into Vitae’s National 3MT® competition, and was selected as one of 12 semi-finalists - from 60 entrants across the UK. He was among just six finalists.

Gathering support from the University research community and beyond, including an interview on Malaysian news channel Astro Awani, Ridzuan won the National 3MT People’s Choice Award and £1,000 prize fund to put towards public engagement activities for his research.

Ridzuan continues to inspire the postdoctoral research community, having also recently won the East Midlands Doctoral Network Three Minute Thesis Competition and the People’s Choice Award.

Yesterday, Ridzuan received the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Award in recognition of his achievements.

Professor Nick Jennings, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Vice-Chancellor said: “Ridzuan is an inspiring ambassador for public engagement in art and design and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s vibrant research community.

Ridzuan’s three minute thesis perfectly illustrates the importance of synthesising information to present what and who his research is for. And he delivers it with great visuals, confidence, and a touch of humour.

I am delighted to present Ridzuan with the Gold Award for his achievements and wish him continued success.”
