Introducing the new Radar curator

Lucy Lopez joins LU Arts as the curator of their contemporary arts research programme, Radar.

She is a curator, writer and researcher based in Birmingham and her work centres around creating a sustainable, equitable and caring art world. She draws on feminisms, practices of care, instituting and the politics of work, and is currently writing her PhD entitled ‘Instituting with Care’ and an edited book of the same name.

Grand Union, Eastside Projects and BALTIC are just some of the places she has recently curated for.  Before moving to the Midlands, she was Curator of Exhibitions and Research at BAK (basis voor actuele kunst) in the Netherlands, where she developed the Instituting Otherwise programme, collaborating with artists such as Nicoline van Harskamp, Jonas Staal and Hito Steyerl.

Lucy is also a co-founder of la Sala, a small ecofeminist art organisation and growing project.

She said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead on the Radar programme, taking forward its history of working with brilliant artists who enable us to see the world differently.

“As Radar is a commission-based programme, I’m excited to be in a position to support artists to make new work in connection to the world-class research taking place at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, and to strengthen and build partnerships across the sector.”

Radar invites artists to produce work in response to, alongside and in provocation of research undertaken across the University’s two campuses. Previous work commissioned includes performance, composition, participatory work, film, mail art, publications, installations and exhibitions.

Whilst some work has been shown in traditional galleries, many of the works have been exhibited in non-traditional arts spaces including indoor and outdoor spaces on both campuses, railway stations, town centres, open and empty shop units, Taylor's Bell Foundry, billboards, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ carillon and many more.
