Be inspired at LU Arts’ spoken word and poetry night

Speech Bubble returns on Monday, 5 December, with students performing alongside an award-winning headliner.

Malaika Kegode, a writer, performer, and creative producer based in Bristol will headline the event. Her work is focused on uplifting and celebrating the overlooked and misunderstood. Beginning her arts career as a performance poet in 2014, Malaika has since developed her practice to encompass theatre, radio, and film writing. To learn more about Malaika, you can visit her website or watch a performance video.

This event is being organised by LU Arts’ Speech Bubble Co-ordinator for 2022/23, Elizabeth Eastgate, an English with Creative Writing student. Elizabeth is a past LU Arts scholarship winner and previous performer at Speech Bubble. She works as social media manager for the poetry and art magazine, Mausoleum Press, and publishes her own work across various literary journals, both online and in print. Elizabeth will be your host for the night as well as performing herself.

Elizabeth commented on the upcoming event: “I'm really passionate about poetry bringing people together, so events such as the Speech Bubble feel really important in creating a comfortable place for people to share their work. There are no skill barriers, meaning it's a really exciting opportunity to engage in a creative way that you might not have done before. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the event brings.”

This event is open to everyone (18+) - students, staff, and members of the public are all welcome to attend.

For the creative and brave individuals, there is even an open mic opportunity – any º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ student or staff member can perform at this event. All abilities levels are welcome, even if it is your first ever time performing your work! LU Arts welcomes performers from all backgrounds, so you can expect a friendly and supportive audience on the night. Please book a slot in advance if you would like to perform, as places are limited.

If you want to be an audience member rather than a performer then tickets are £5 (free for students) and you can book online in advance or pay on the door.
