Diverse Voices in Textiles is a pioneering teaching initiative by an academic team at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ based in the School of Design and Creative Arts.
The exhibition will be available to view in the Martin Hall Exhibition Space 6June-31 July, 12-2pm weekdays. Booking is not required.
The project aims to build a considered, inclusive and diverse agenda to advance the conversation in textiles and amplify the voices of those it serves. Launched through the creation of a digital resource, guest talks and an exhibition, Diverse Voices in Textiles sets out to celebrate distinguished textile designers, artists and practitioners who have otherwise been under-represented within curriculums and the history of textiles. The project brings critical stories to the forefront, enriching and enhancing our students' knowledge and understanding of the discipline.
The exhibition will include selected examples of work and artefacts by textile designers, artists and practitioners including the project team, guest speakers, alumni and current students from the undergraduate and doctoral community.
The project team includes:
- Dr Kerri Akiwowo, Lecturer in Textiles
- Dr Chetna Prajapati, Lecturer in Textiles
- Kit Neale, Programme Director and Lecturer, BA (Hons) Textile Design
- Emma Wood, University Teacher: Textiles
Dr Kerri Akiwowo said: “This is a real landmark showcase and precedent. It’s an opportunity to thrust textiles into the spotlight by magnifying the contributions of marginalised groups within the discipline, in and outside of academic contexts. This work is an acknowledgement of individuals, their practice and value.”
