This exciting in-person event will comprise a film screening of Shalini Kantayya’s multiple award-winning documentary, Coded Bias, followed by an open panel-led discussion.
The panel will be chaired by Professor Jin Xuan, Head of Department of Chemical Engineering and Co-Lead of the Theme, and will also feature our new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Jennings.
Focusing on MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that many facial recognition technologies misclassify women and darker-skinned faces, Coded Bias raises compelling issues regarding the ubiquity of artificial intelligence in everyday life and the impact of widespread algorithmic bias on matters of social justice, equity and governance. The Coded Bias trailer can be viewed here.
The IAS is delighted to announce the following experts will be joining Professor Xuan and Professor Jennings on the panel:
- Visiting Fellow, Raffaella Ocone, Chair of Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University
- Pragya Agarwal, Visiting Professor of Social Inequities and Injustice at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ
- Kutoma Wakanuma, Associate Professor of Research and Teaching in Information Systems at De Montfort University
- Qinggang Meng, Professor of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence and Theme Co-Lead.
Professor Marsha Meskimmon, Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies said: “I am delighted that we are able to screen Kantayya’s thought-provoking film in-person to launch this year’s annual Theme, and that such a stellar group of scholars can join us for the panel. The event sets the tone for what I am sure will be a fascinating series of events around AI over the coming academic year.”
Professor Steve Rothberg, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), commented: “With the recent launch of the National AI Strategy, this is a very timely and exciting programme of activity which will strengthen º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s diverse research in artificial intelligence and extend our national and international collaborations in this area.”
The event will be held on-campus at the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Design School and light refreshments will be available. For further information and to register, please visit the dedicated webpage here.
