This workshop will welcome three IAS Fellows, including former Director of GCHQ, Professor Sir David Omand (Kings College London), Dr Jason von Meding, who is an expert in the field of disaster studies from FIBER, University of Florida, and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ colleague Dr Natalia Janson, whose research in the mathematical sciences explores non-linear time series and dynamical systems.
The virtual workshop will be a trialogue exploring the role that time plays in the modern “risk society”. Both disasters and our responses to them unfold in time, and the speed (or, in other words, the shortening of time) with which the response can be formulated and implemented can make a critical difference.
The Fellows will open the session with the following presentations:
- Professor Sir David Omand: ‘Spy time: The Search for Chronophages’
- Dr Jason von Meding: ‘Disaster as a Time-Delayed Manifestation of Structural Violence’
- Dr Natalia Janson ‘The Mind as the Process in Time: A Mathematical Perspective’
The workshop will run from 2pm-5pm, with a welcome from the Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Allison.
To register for the event please contact Laura Dale by emailing L.Dale@lboro.ac.uk. A link to the event will be sent in advance, and all are welcome to attend.
The IAS annual Theme of Time is being led by Dr Alexander Zagoskin (School of Science), Dr Arianna Maiorani (School of Social Sciences and Humanities), Professor Peter Kawalek (School of Business and Economics) and Dr Thoralf Klein (School of Social Sciences and Humanities).
Professor Marsha Meskimmon said: “We are pleased to be continuing our Time Theme with another dynamic, interdisciplinary event that explores the crucial role played by time in the unfolding of events and experience. We hope that colleagues will be able to join us for what is sure to be a lively afternoon.”
