º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ in partnership with China Scholarship Council to increase PhD scholarship offers

The University strengthens its partnership with China Scholarship Council (CSC) with 20 PhD. scholarships on offer for the 2021-22 academic year.

CSC is a legal non-profit institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education. It provides assistance for Chinese citizens to study abroad and foreign citizens to study in China. In 2019, CSC funded over 66,000 Chinese students to study in 110 countries and regions, and 65,000 foreign students to undertake studies in China.

In 2016, a delegation led by the University Vice-Chancellor visited CSC office in Beijing. Both parties fully exchanged views on topics interests and agreed to enhance the collaboration in all fields, particularly in PhD student training.  Since then, the University has enrolled an increasing number of CSC-funded PhD students. In November 2020, the two sides officially set up a joint scholarship for outstanding young Chinese students to pursue their full PhD research at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.    

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Steve Rothberg commented: “PhD students play a vital role in the University’s world-class research effort. Each year we welcome 50 new Chinese students to our Doctoral Researchers community, joining students from 59 countries around the world. We are delighted to work with China Scholarship Council to increase the opportunities for Chinese students to join our community.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison added: “Our partnership with CSC will benefit the University and research community greatly and I look forward to welcoming the students in the next academic year.”

Deputy Secretary-General of CSC, Dr Qing Li commented: “For years, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ has been playing an active role in supporting CSC scholarship awardees and other Chinese students. The agreement will help to underpin sustainable and reciprocal partnerships between º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and its Chinese counterparts in a long term, so as to further promote mutual understanding between two nations.”
