Professional and amateur spoken word artists take to the virtual stage for LU Arts’ upcoming Speech Bubble event

On Monday 7 December, LU Arts will be hosting their popular performance poetry showcase online for the very first time and it is hoped this will open the event up to new audiences.

Speech Bubble – which takes place twice each academic year and is part of the Happy Mondays programme – is an opportunity for students to perform their own work in front of an audience. It’s also a chance for students, staff and the wider public to enjoy the considerable talent the student population has to offer. Every year the event impresses with the range and depth of spoken word talent – from students from across all subject areas and interests.

In addition to the open mic performers, the event also plays host to a professional spoken word artist. CK Breeze is a spoken word artist from London. He straddles the lines between poetry and hip hop with his usage of internal rhyme, syncopation and vivid imagery. Having had his work showcased on platforms such as BBC 1xtra, VEVO and performing at the Roundhouse, Charles brings a fresh perspective to the poetry scene.

The event is free to attend and will start at 7.30pm on Zoom. Those who are interested in attending will need to book their place online so they can receive further details on how to join.

As it is an online event, open mic slots must be booked in advance; anyone who wishes to perform on the night should contact LU Arts by emailing LUarts@lboro.ac.uk no later than Friday 4 December.

This term’s Speech Bubble event is being organised by Speech Bubble Co-Ordinator, London student Andrew Antwi. Andrew is studying for an MSc in Risk, Governance and International Management at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ London. Having learnt the piano from a young age he developed an interest in artistic performance which grew during his teenage years. He immersed himself in spoken word and poetry and is in the process of setting up a music production company with two friends alongside his studies.

Andrew was appointed to the role of Speech Bubble Co-Ordinator earlier this term, along with º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ student Megan Constable. They are each being paid a fee to organise one Speech Bubble event as well as gaining experience in event management and marketing. Megan will organise the event next term, when it is hoped it will be able to take place in the Students’ Union as usual.

Andrew will act as compere for the event and he will be live streaming from the London campus along with the CK Breeze and several of the open mic performers. The rest of the open mic student performers will be logging in to perform online and the event will be available to watch from Zoom.

Speaking about the event, Andrew said: “The Speech Bubble event will be a great night to showcase some of the spoken word and poetry talent the University has to offer. We encourage all members of the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ community and wider to attend the event.”
