Professor Ray Siemens will give a lecture on 20 November on engaging the public in academic research.

Staff, students and members of the public are invited to attend the talk entitled ‘Open scholarship foundations, nurture and sustenance: establishing and maintaining structures for productive dialogue among academics and an engaged public.’

The lecture will be held in LDS017, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Design School, at 4pm.

A specialist in open access and open scholarship, Professor Ray Siemens is also the founder of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria, Canada. He is experienced in making academic research more impactful and engaging for those outside of universities.

Ray Siemens’s lecture comes towards the end of a rich programme of activities, generously funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Steve Rothberg, will introduce the lecture. He said: “I’m very excited about Professor Ray Siemens’s visit to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, as part of our strategy to attract the world’s best academic researchers to our campuses.

“The Leverhulme Visiting Professorship scheme is a great way to make this happen, and I am grateful to the Leverhulme Trust for supporting this visit.”

Dr Lise Jaillant, a lecturer in English and Digital Humanities, was awarded a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship award to organise Ray Siemens’s visit.  She said: “I passionately believe that our research should be more open to a wide range of people. It has been a privilege to welcome Ray Siemens and his team on this side of the Atlantic.

“I would like to encourage everyone to join us for this lecture to learn more about open access.”
