One student that will be displaying her work this year is Hannah Brumby, who studies Graphic Communication and Illustration.
Her work has been inspired by family members that have faced difficulties and she has produced two branding concepts for existing organisations to tackle stigmas and raise awareness.
Her first project, ‘Give Back’, focuses on homelessness in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and looks how a local pub could play a part in opening up discussions surrounding the topic.
After a family member faced homelessness, Hannah recognised that it was a subject that was often avoided or considered taboo. Her aim was to challenge the stereotypes around the topic.
She created posters, beer mats and table tents with simple designs in bold colours that would catch people’s attention but were also easy to read from far away.
They were created with local pubs in mind, as Hannah believes they provide an informal setting for conversations to be started.
The project that Hannah will be showcasing at the Arts Degree Show is one she has focused on in her second semester. The project was inspired by her younger cousin who was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that has many symptoms, including the development of epilepsy.
Hannah found a charity that raises money specifically for research into this disorder and designed a re-brand for their website.
She focused on raising awareness of epilepsy and created web content that educated people on what to do when someone has an epileptic fit.
She commented: “I think it’s important to work on projects that are personal to me, as not only am I addressing issues that affect my own family members, I’m also educating and raising awareness for others.”
Hannah’s work is driven by her passion for charity work and she hopes to work in the sector after graduating.
To see these designs and the other fantastic pieces on display, visit the Arts Degree Show, which takes place from 8-16 June.
Students, staff and members of the public are all welcome to attend the exhibition, which is open from 10am-5pm. Entry is via the Edward Barnsley Building.
