Taking place at the Students’ Union on campus, Freefest promises to bring a bit of summer to the town with a variety of exciting activities.

If you’re looking to treat yourself this Bank Holiday, there will be a range of stalls and outlets to choose from and John Cooper’s will be hosting the DJ Society’s Day Party.

Performances will take place on the Union Lawn between 12pm-6pm featuring live music, spoken word, stand-up comedy and dance groups from some of the best home-grown talent the University has to offer. 

Three LU Arts scholarship students will be taking to the Freefest stage. Ada Ughanwa and Michael Asolo are both creative writing and spoken word scholars and will be performing with other students that have attended the Speech Bubble events that they organise.

Ada has been writing since Year 11, but her interest in spoken word was sparked after attending the Victory Youth Group. Her scholarship has helped boost her confidence in her creativity, leading to her performing at the Round House and Wandsworth Council Chambers.

Michael has only been performing for a year, but the scholarship has helped him hone his craft and natural flair for creative writing and spoken word.

The stage will also see Gospel music artist and recipient of the songwriter scholarship, Michael Harry. He has already recorded two albums and says he is inspired by RnB, Soul and Pop as well as Gospel music.

Event organiser Ben Steward said: “Freefest is a fantastic opportunity to see a showcase of student talent; we have a great array of performances across two areas of the Union Building. 

“Absolutely everybody is welcome at this free event, and there is no need to book or purchase a ticket.”
