º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ celebrates support of society with annual dinner

Last week, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s Vice Chancellor Professor Robert Allison welcomed members of the Schofield Society for an annual dinner which took place in the Hazlerigg Building.

The group – which was founded in 2010 and named after Dr Herbert Schofield, Principal of º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ College for 35 years – is the University’s annual giving members club for donors who have significantly supported the University.

The evening event, which took place on Thursday 18 October, celebrated and thanked the Society’s members who have contributed to the University over the last twelve months.

At the dinner Professor Allison gave a speech, which included an update on the University, the wider UK higher-education environment as well as the importance of the Society to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

Other speakers included º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Students’ Union President, Rahul Mathasing, Professor Mark Lewis (Dean of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences) and Dr Paul Sanderson.

Each year a third of the investment into new initiatives at the University comes from charitable donations, and since 2010 members of the Society have donated more than £10m towards a variety of initiatives and projects.

Their contributions have supported: scholarships for over 150 students, schemes to build and enhance campus facilities - including the STEMLab and the Library - plus international development projects across 30 countries such as Zambia, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka.

Professor Robert Allison commented: “Members of the Schofield Society are very important to the University.

“In today’s climate, charitable gifts are key in ensuring º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ continues to deliver the highest quality educational experience to its students.

“A big thank you to all of the members who have been so generous to us over the last year and it was a pleasure to spend this evening celebrating with you."
