Students awarded exhibition space after success in annual artists’ awards

Two Fine Art students have had their talent recognised in the Leicester Society of Artists (LSA) Student Awards.

Da Hyoung Choi, who will begin her final year this October, has been named the 2018 winner with her piece 'Into the Habitable World'.

The LSA selection team described the acrylic on canvas artwork as a “stunning and original work, which resonated with depth and mystery”.

Alice Miller, who is about to begin her second year at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, has also been announced as the joint runner-up with ‘45 Hours’ – a “skilfully-painted” portrait in acrylic on paper.

Both students will receive cash prizes and their work will be included in the LSA Annual Exhibition 2018, which will be held at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester from 8 November – 8 December.

In addition, Da Hyoung will have a solo exhibition at Cank Street Gallery, also in Leicester, and Alice’s work will be included in an exhibition at the same gallery. Cank Street Gallery sponsored the LSA Student Award and both exhibitions are scheduled for 2019.

Dayle Flude, a member of the award selection team and owner of Cank Street Gallery, commented: “Our choice of winner was unanimous. Choi has created a striking image in response to a text by Georges Perec concerning racism. The work is quite superb.”

Choi says she is grateful for the encouragement she received from those around her. She said: “It has been a good start in my long art journey.”

Alice added: “It was really affirming at the end of first year.”

Dr Deborah Harty, Programme Director for Fine Art at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, said: “We are delighted to hear that Choi and Alice have been successfully placed in the LSA Student Awards. It is always invaluable as a student to have confirmation that your work is reaching people outside of your place of study.

"Competitions such as this boost students’ confidence and offer a valuable opportunity to gain professional experience. We look forward to seeing Choi’s and Alice’s work in the planned future exhibitions.”
