On October 17, top military officials including the Director General, Joint Force Development and Defence Academy and Vice Admiral D L Potts CB visited º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ to sign the document and meet with senior staff and members of the University’s Typhoon Squadron.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is for the provision of the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) of which the University has been a member since 2004.
It was established by the MOD to provide academic and financial support to students studying for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) degrees, all of whom are committed to becoming officers in one of the services (Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and the Civil Service).
Through the Typhoon Squadron, selected º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students are mentored throughout their academic study to help them develop the skills and attributes they will need to fulfil their long-term commitment to the services. It currently has 77 sponsored students, who regularly support Open Days, Freshers’ Fairs and other student activities.
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is one of only 11 UK universities that are part of the DTUS, and is the only Squadron based on a university campus, reflecting the close relationship between the University and DTUS.
Vice Admiral D L Potts CB said: “The re-signing of this MOU signifies the continued enduring relationship between the Defence Academy and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, whereby DTUS students are able to attend first class degree programmes and enjoy the outstanding facilities offered by º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.”
