National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine public lecture series 2017

The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) has announced its public lecture programme for 2017.

The first lecture in the series, ‘Health behaviours and musculoskeletal injury – a veteran’s view’ will take place on 10 May, presented by Dr Paul Sanderson, Lead Translational Scientist – Military Medicine and Rehabilitation, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

Paul spent over 30 years in the British Army, initially joining the Royal Engineers before transferring to the elite Royal Army Physical Training Corps in 1992.

Subsequently, he passed the Joint Services Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors Course in 1997 and moved to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Headley Court before taking voluntary retirement in 2014 to concentrate on his academic ambitions.

Whilst still in the British Army, Paul completed his first degree in Sports Science and Sport Rehabilitation at St Mary’s University College in 2002, before completing a master’s in Physical Activity and Health in 2008 and a PhD in 2014, both at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

The lecture will provide commentary on health behaviours and musculoskeletal injury in the military, what is currently known and what can be done, and what the implications are for uniformed government sectors and populational resilience.

September 13, 2017: Contemporary issues surrounding lifestyle and health in children

Presented by Dr Lauren Sherar, Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity and Public Health, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

November 1, 2017: Cardiac risks of excessive exercise: can too much physical activity really damage the heart?

Presented by Professor David Stensel, Professor of Exercise Metabolism, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

December 6, 2017: When all else fails: the role of drugs and surgery in the war against obesity

Presented by Dr James King, Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
