Celebrating five years of Fruit Routes

A marathon twelve-hour event will celebrate five years of the campus Fruit Routes project.

Fruit Routes is an artist-led initiative created by Anne-Marie Culhane working with the University’s Sustainability team. The project began in 2011 as an invited proposal to LU Arts’ Radar programme, before it was extended throughout the University.

It aims to develop the campus as an edible landscape, planting fruit trees, increasing foraging opportunities, and sharing knowledge with the wider community through engaging events.

Running on 15 June from midday to midnight, the celebratory event includes:

  • A walk of the route alongside an artist and ecologist
  • Sampling of wild and local refreshments
  • Live acoustic music, where guests can bring along a picnic
  • The chance to marvel at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s ‘night flyers’ including moths and bats

It will also see the launch of the Fruit Routes book, which commemorates the first five years of the project.

Jo Shields, Sustainability Manager at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ said: “June is always an exciting month for Fruit Routes, with trees and plants in full bloom, but 2017 is particularly special as it marks the project's five-year anniversary.

“The event will be a real celebration of its success and future development, and we welcome anyone to come and join in with the activities.”

The full programme flyer is available here.

The events are free and open to all. All activities will start by meeting at the Barefoot Orchard, near the Meteorological Station opposite Pilkington Library.
