Performance athletes inducted into the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Sport Hall of Fame
Liam Tancock and Carl Johnson are the latest inductees to receive the recognition which celebrates the outstanding achievements of athletes and coaches who have made a significant contribution to sport beyond º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
Liam Tancock graduated from the University in 2011 having studied Sports Science atº¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ College. He is Great Britain’s most successful male swimmer of the past decade, having won medals at four consecutive FINA World Championships.
The double Olympian also made the finals in both the 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley at Beijing 2008, then finishing fifth in the 100m Backstroke and fourth in the 4x100m medley relay at London 2012.
Second inductee, Carl Johnson, graduated in 1959 with a degree in Geography and Practical Physical Education also from º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ College.
He coached 35 athletes to, or at, International level, most notably Meg Ritchie, Discus British Record Holder, and Jonathan Edwards, Triple Jump World Record Holder.
He was accorded British Coach of the Year in 1995, and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom. Carl has published many books and articles, and made numerous presentations for organisations, providing an excellent guide for teachers and coaches from grass-roots to elite level.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison, welcomed and presented both inductees with a commemorative framed picture at the reception held in the Clyde Williams Building. Alumnus and Sports Journalist, Mihir Bose, also conducted a Q&A session with Liam and Carl at the event.
