The exhibition contains film and photography, featuring ‘Chad’, Chaz’s male alter ego. Chaz is keen that this project promotes a less ‘fixed’ and more open understanding of the gender spectrum.

Each year, LU Arts offers an exhibition opportunity to its Art pass members, a scheme open to University student’s in which they gain experience and knowledge about the visual arts. The winner is given use of the LU Arts project space as well as support from specialist staff to showcase their work.

Chaz said: “I want to open people’s minds to the concept that gender is fluid. The video piece explores gender as performance and demonstrates how an individual can alter their physical appearance so slightly and yet be perceived as a different gender… for me it highlights the fact that gender is not innate.”

Director of Arts, Nick Slater, said: “We were particularly excited by Chaz’s proposal and the themes the work is exploring. As this is a developmental opportunity we were keen to support the production of a new piece of work as well as offer the chance to showcase the body of work as a whole.”

An official opening takes place tomorrow (22 April) at 5pm in the LU Arts Project Space. There will be refreshments available and a live performance by Chaz. The exhibition is running until Friday 6 May and is open 10am – 5pm daily. It is part of the student festival Freefest. On 4 May, Chaz will share influences and research related to this exhibition with visitors and staff.
