º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Lightning land four England cricket internationals for inaugural Kia Super League
Georgia Elwiss, Becky Grundy, Amy Jones and Beth Langston will link up with Lightning Head Coach Salliann Briggs, having all been º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ students.
Both Elwiss and Grundy featured in the recent Women’s ICC World Twenty20, with Elwiss taking two wickets against Pakistan in their final group game of the tournament, which they won by 68 runs.
Commenting on the fact she’ll play for º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Lightning this summer, current student Becky Grundy said:
“º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ have played an integral part in helping me get into the England side so I’m really proud that I’ll play for the Lightning in the Kia Super League.
“It’s brilliant that there will be four of us who have studied at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ – Georgia Elwiss, Amy Jones and Beth Langston – playing in the same team. The fact that we know the set-up means that we can provide a really strong core for the squad.
“With the overseas players still to be announced, the Lightning team is shaping up to be a real force, and I can’t wait to wear the team colours this summer. We know that all the best players in the world have shown an interest to be involved, so the quality of the competition is set to be really high, which is so exciting for us and great for the game.”
Discussing how the players have been allocated, Kia Super League General Manager Jo Kirk, added:
“The key considerations when initially approaching the player allocation process were to ensure an even balance of talent across the six teams, alongside factoring in the local allegiances of the players as much as possible.
“Each of the teams will have a squad of 15 players, which will consist of a maximum of four centrally contracted England women’s players, three overseas players, and a maximum of three England Women’s Academy players. The remainder of players will come from the England Women’s Development Programme and a comprehensive county talent identification process.”
Tickets for Lightning’s three home games, which will be played at the Haselgrave Cricket Ground at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, go on sale at 10am today (6th April). To secure your tickets for the games on the 3rd, 5th and 12th August head to www.loughboroughsport.com/lightning-cricket
