º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ to offer Chevening Scholarships to Brazilian students
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is to offer prestigious Chevening Scholarships to students from Brazil, as part of a new partnership announced in Rio de Janeiro by Alex Ellis, the British Ambassador to Brazil.
Two Chevening/º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Olympic Legacy Scholarships will be offered each year for the next three years, starting in 2015-16. The Scholarships are aimed at students who wish to study for a one-year Master’s degree in sports management disciplines at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.
Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, such as universities. The programme brings outstanding scholars from around the world, who have the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers, to study postgraduate courses in the UK. Previous Chevening scholars have returned to their home countries to take up influential senior positions in government, governing bodies and industry.
Recipients of the Chevening/º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Olympic Legacy Scholarships will be able to study either at the main º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ campus or at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ London's Institute of Sport Business, which opens on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this autumn. The scholarships will cover the full cost of the students’ tuition fees and provide a living allowance.
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ is one of just a handful of UK universities to offer a Chevening Partnership Award.
Professor Robert Allison, Vice Chancellor and President of º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Chevening to offer these scholarships to outstanding students from Brazil.
“º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ played a significant role in the London 2012 Games: we hosted the official preparation camp headquarters for Team GB, ninety º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ-connected athletes competed at the Games, and sports benefitted from our pioneering research and innovation. With Rio set to host the 2016 Games, it is fitting that we are able to offer these scholarships to underline the important role that the Olympics and Paralympics play and the positive legacy that they can leave in the host countries.”
Alex Ellis, the British Ambassador to Brazil, said: “This scholarship provides not only an excellent opportunity for future sports leaders to study at one of the UK's best universities, but also shows Great Britain's desire to work with Brazil on the legacy of the Rio 2016 Olympics."
