Bringing science to life for all the family at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s British Science Week
º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ will host a fun-filled week of events and activities for families, schools and colleges as part of the UK-wide British Science Week.
Running from Friday 13 March to Sunday 22 March, the 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths aims to educate and inspire people of all ages with a variety of free workshops and interactive demonstrations.
The week’s main event will be a Community Fun Day on Saturday 21 March from 1pm-5pm at the Stewart Mason and James France Buildings on campus. Entry is via the Epinal Way entrance. Discover everything you need to know about the engineering of cars, the science of walking on custard, building a human body and more. And for those with a more adventurous side, the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Molecule Hunt will take place in the town centre, with 10 stores hiding a molecule linked to reactions that occur in the human body during exercise. Participants are required to find each of the different molecules and complete a Discovery Sheet for a chance to win science prizes and a science workshop for their school.
Meanwhile, there will be a variety of activities for schools and colleges to get involved in from Monday 16 to Thursday 19 March, including a workshop on renewable energy which gives students the chance to make their own Gratzel solar cells to help power a calculator, and a Soap Science and Enterprise workshop which involves students working in teams to design and create dissolvable bath bombs from simple kitchen ingredients.
For budding scientists, the Science Challenge Day encourages students to analyse available evidence in order to identify the ‘doughnut thief’. And on Wednesday 18 March, the Bridge Engineering workshop will see students team up to learn more about the concepts of civil engineering needed in order to construct a model bridge. Students will also receive an introduction to Sport Psychology by PhD Researcher and Performance Psychologist Gillian Cook, which will explore the application of Sport Psychology in professional sport to improve performance. Dr Sian Williams, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s British Science Week Co-ordinator and Subject Outreach Specialist, said: “British Science Week is a fantastic opportunity to learn new things and is a chance to develop a natural curiosity for ‘how the world works’. We would like to welcome as many people as possible to our free Community Fun Day which will be an entertaining day out for all the family.
“º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ has established a reputation for technological innovation and scientific endeavour, and our research is helping to shape the future. We hope to inspire whole new audiences during British Science Week.”
