Lumps and Bumps
Learn to check your lumps for bumps! Become one of the target 1,001 people trained in breast and testicular self-examinations over the course of just one day.
Join us on 20 March, 8am – 8pm
Women, men and non-binary friends, it’s time to get serious and learn how to check your lumps for bumps. Breast and testicular cancer are becoming increasingly recurrent within the UK and worryingly, many adults confess they still don’t know how to check themselves for the signs and symptoms of these life-threatening diseases.
Did you know
- On average, one person is diagnosed every 10 minutes with breast cancer
- Around one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and there's a good chance of recovery if it's detected in its early stages
- Breast cancer is often thought to only affect women, but it can affect anyone as we all have breast tissue
- There are almost 2,500 new cases of testicular cancer each year
- Almost 50% of cases of testicular cancer are men under 35 but it is one of the most treatable and curable cancers if detected early
Lumps and Bumps is a 12-hour collaborative event hosted by º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Students’ Union which aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and confidence required to check themselves. Over the course of the day, we are aiming to reach 1,001 staff, students, LUSEP campus partners and members of the community to educate them about the various warning signs of breast and testicular cancer.
Each session will showcase a range of techniques that can be used to detect these life-threatening diseases, as well as raising the profile of the vital work carried out by our charity partners – CoppaFeel! and Ballboys.
The event is open to all regardless of any prior training that you may have received. We strongly believe that refreshing your memory of what to look out for is just as important as learning the techniques and signs in the first place.
There is no restriction on who can attend the sessions and we welcome attendees to learn how to check both breasts and testicles if they wish to.
It is important to remember that early detection of breast or testicular cancer can dramatically increase the chance of survival, so we hope that as many staff, students and members of the public as possible will join us on the day.
What do the sessions involve?
The sessions themselves are simple and take around 30 minutes. The format will be a mixture of presentation-led content with an opportunity to then practice technique on specialist training mannequins.
There is no need to sign up in advance of the day, please head straight to the location most convenient for you, and the staff there will register you onto the next available slot.
Members of staff
Members of staff can ask to be formally released by their line managers to take part and count the session towards their continuous professional development (CPD).
Students
Students should register upon arrival to enable your hall to earn points towards the Hall of the Year competition!
