º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ presents the Inaugural Race Equity Town Hall
On 25 October, the University will hold its first Race Equity Town Hall to share the outcomes and action plan of the Race Equality Charter (REC) Bronze application, which was submitted in July 2021.
Since 2019, colleagues and students from across the University have been involved in driving forward the extensive work undertaken to prepare for the REC. The resulting action plan was developed following consultation with BAME staff and students and has also been reviewed and approved by Senior Leadership Teams, Senate and Council.
The REC is part of the University’s broader development and progression of an institution-wide Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) agenda. In recent years, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ has undertaken a significant amount of work towards understanding the problem of racial inequality.
This is the result of an effective partnership between the University and its  BAME Staff Network, relaunched in 2018 under the Co-Chairship of Dr. James Esson, Reader in Geography, and Veronica Moore, Head of Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity. The active involvement and championing of key senior members of University leadership, especially Richard Taylor, Chief Operating Officer and one of the Race Equality Champions, has been vital to these efforts.
The session will celebrate the work achieved so far, explain what the key issues are based on the data gathered, and introduce the headline actions planned, supported by the re-formation of the Race Equity Working Group and the dissemination of the Guiding Principles for all activity.
The event will also launch two community-based initiatives conceptualised and led by the BAME Staff Network, in collaboration with:
-
Citizens UK (of which º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ London is a member): the Collective Anti-Racist Efforts (CARE) x CUK Listening Campaign
-
Afro-Caribbean Society, Ethnic Minorities Network, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Students’ Union, and the Doctoral College: LSU BAME Student Council and BAME PGR Consortium, new vehicles for greater BAME student advocacy and inclusion at the University.
In her capacity as Strategic Architect, Dr. Angela Martinez Dy will also present plans for Phase 1 of the LU Race Equity Strategy, and co-host the event alongside LU London Doctoral Researcher Iman Khan.
The University acknowledges and thanks everyone who has been involved in the development of this work to date. It is also keen to identify new leaders to actively advance its anti-racist efforts across Schools, Professional Services, and operations. Staff, students, and interested members of the local community in º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ and East London are invited to attend the Town Hall to hear about this work in more detail and begin an ongoing dialogue with those currently engaged.
The event will be held from 2pm-4pm both online and in-person. For those who cannot attend, the event will be recorded and made available shortly after.
