Design School student invited to exhibit at Gadget Show Live
BSc Product Design and Technology student Ben Rawls was invited to display his product as part of the British Inventors’ Project at the Gadget Show Live.
In response to the widely reported increase in cases of food poisoning, particularly from campylobacter, second year student Ben Rawls’ designed Souschef – a product that uses ultraviolet light to sterilise knives and kitchen utensils.
Integrating available technologies within a desirable and intuitive design solution, the project presented an opportunity for Ben to employ his visual and technical know-how to solve a real world problem.
Souschef was one of 20 products shortlisted for the 2015 British Inventors’ Project, part of the Gadget Show Live, and went on to receive one of the three ‘Highly Commended’ awards.
Ben comments: “It’s been such a surreal experience and I was overwhelmed with the positive feedback I received from members of the public. From doing the early sketches in my bedroom to exhibiting at the National Exhibition Centre, it’s been truly amazing”.
Dr Mark Evans, module leader for year two Design Practice, said: “It was absolutely fantastic to see one of our second year undergraduate students exhibiting at such a major event and attracting so much interest. Ben’s stand was professionally presented and made all more appealing by his supporting visuals and display of models and prototypes”.
