Webb Ellis Cup heading to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ

Calling all rugby fans – the World Cup Trophy is coming to º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ on Thursday 13th August between 3pm and 5pm!

Ahead of the Rugby World Cup kicking off in September, the Webb Ellis Cup will be travelling the length and breadth of the UK and next Thursday is º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ’s turn to host the famous trophy.

As part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour, staff, students and the local community will get the chance to have their picture taken with the trophy, just over two months before the 2015 winners follow suit.

World Cup finalist and Leicester Tigers legend George Chuter is just one rugby man who’s very excited about the trophy visiting campus. The player-turned-University-coach said:

“It’s not every year that the World Cup comes to your home country, and it’s the first time since ’91 for us, so it’s a big occasion and I hope those that want to experience it will get to.

“Having the World Cup itself coming to campus is a massive deal for any sports fans; it’s going to be amazing. We’re a centre of excellence for sport and we’ve got World Cup winners in our alumni, so it’s fitting that before a home World Cup the trophy comes here; I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Webb Ellis Cup will be presented on the Hazlerigg lawn by the University Fountain between 3pm and 5pm on Thursday 13th August. Staff, students and members of the public are all welcome, and are encouraged to bring their cameras for this once in a lifetime photo opportunity. Toilet and café facilities will be available in the adjacent Students Union, however in the event of wet weather the trophy will be relocated to the Netball and Badminton Centre.

Those arriving via the main university gatehouse will be able to obtain directions from the security office; however convenient car parks will be clearly signposted.
